Mobile Studio: Supplies for a Nomad Artist

In 2009, I took on the path of exploration and travel, connecting with others in the web-business/technology industry as well as venturing into opportunities that would open up for my art. In so doing, I’d learned many ways of supporting my work while on the road.

A great artist I’ve come to know, Hazel Dooney had inspired me to put together a travel studio so that I could work while away. This saved me when I was getting behind on creating work and keeping the creative flow going. My nomadic spirit has forced me to create smaller work, but in the end, it has created more liberty for my own self expression and organization.

Here’s what I take along with me in my mobile studio:

- Masonite or scratch board. This can be used as a makeshift easel

- Black painting tape, for sticking the art paper against the easel

- Watercolor and bristol papers. In 8×11 or 9×12

- Illustration journal. I can jot down series concepts and notes

- Sharpie markers in multiple colors. I love Sharpies in particular and usually create mini pieces on 2×3 watercolor paper live on my webshow. I keep them in a ziploc bag.

- Small paint palette and set of brushes. I prefer the brown nylon brushes on plastic rods. They won’t become weathered and crumble with time.

- Small tube paints by Golden. I prefer acrylics and these are the best of the material. Amazing colors. I try to stick to the basic colors so I can blend them as I go. I create mixed media pieces with these along with Sharpies.

- Bamboo tablet. For vector illustration or art enhancement, this small Wacom tablet is great to take along with my Macbook.

- Messenger bag. I keep all of the materials in this for easy access.

  1. See, now this just makes me want to paint. ^_^

I’ve been considering trying a new brand of paint, actually. I’ve been using Basics in the medium sized tubes, but I’ve never tried these Golden grand ones.

Now, if only you could tell us the weight of this messenger bag once everything is in it..haha. j/k.
